Rahul R. Dhakal Civil-Water Resources Engineer at AECOM
Bucknell University, 2016, B.S. Civil & Environmental Engineering

“As a young engineering student, Grand Challenges Scholar Program (GCSP) was pivotal in my development as a critical thinker and in extending my knowledge to broader topics of water resources engineering beyond just the academic electives. Under GCSP and another program called Global Renewable Energy Education Network (GREEN), I travelled to and attended lectures at Iceland School of Energy in the summer of 2015, where I learned about the country’s sustainable and entrepreneurial development in hydropower as a renewable energy. Exploring power plants and reservoirs near Reykjavík, I got a first-hand perspective into the challenge of ‘greenwashing’ hydropower and minimizing its frequently imposed socio-economic and environmental tradeoffs. As a Civil Engineer at AECOM for 3 years now, GCSP experience has been an invaluable asset as I develop a conscientious understanding of our industrial practice and its implications on global water resources. I plan to continue this endeavor as an incoming M.S. candidate at Stanford University in fall 2019 focusing on Water Resources and Hydrology.”
